The South German Climate Office at KIT

  • We are the point of contact for structuring and communicating information on climate and climate change for southern Germany.
  • We offer comprehensible, solid and user-oriented climate knowledge with a focus on regional climate modeling and extreme weather events.
  • We have a wide range of expertise in climate research at KIT, in the Helmholtz Association and beyond.

Climate change represents a major challenge for science, politics, business and society as a whole at international, national and regional level. As KIT conducts a lot of research on climate and climate change, the South German Climate Office was founded at the end of 2007 (KIT press release on the foundation). Since then, the activities of the South German Climate Office have grown steadily and are very diverse.

The South German Climate Office at KIT mediates between climate research and society and provides the media, public organizations and decision-makers from business and politics with scientific information on the climate and the effects of regional climate change. It draws on the research results and expertise of the Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research and the KIT Center for Climate and Environment as well as other institutes and facilities of KIT and the southern German region.

In dialog with society, information needs, especially on regional climate change, can be identified and communicated to the research institutions. In addition, the Southern German Climate Office initiates cooperation with other scientific disciplines and initiates inter- and transdisciplinary projects.
